Hydro or Hydraulic mining as it is called is a way of mining that uses high-volume and high-pressure streams of water to blast the sediments and materials. This dislodges the materials and minerals, allowing this ensuing flow to be collected in a sump where it passes through multiple processes to either move or process the material. This process which has been around since the 1850s is typically done via a large tool called a water monitor or cannon. These monitors are either manually or remotely operated and allow for free movement of the stream to blast the desired material and break it up for recovery of the metals contained therein.
This process can help to recover minerals contained in tailings and soils. These minerals can then be reprocessed by the mine allowing for an increase in profits and mineral recovery. Or in the case of a coal seam, the water monitor can be used to break up the coal for later collection.
The implementation of water monitors means using the right equipment which can be paramount to ensuring maximum delivery or concentration of flow in particular areas. This will break up and turn solids into a processable slurry. Manual monitors can be deployed in circumstances where operators need to finely control the monitor for effective delivery of the stream on-site, thereby reducing costs associated with rigging up a remote system with hydraulics and electrical componentry.
Remote monitors can be deployed where hazardous conditions exist, particularly for fire applications where it may not be possible to have employees due to hazardous ratings. We often see remote monitors used in vehicle washing applications as well.
